There are records that defined an era. Then there are records that transcended it entirely. Brothers in Arms, released in 1985, did both, and forty years later it sounds not like a museum piece but like something timeless, still breathing, still relevant.

Mark Knopfler is one of the most distinctive guitarists who ever lived. No pick, just fingers, coaxing sounds out of a Stratocaster that shouldn't be possible. On Brothers in Arms that gift is on full display, but what elevates this album above mere technical brilliance is the writing. These are songs about war, loss, loyalty, and the strange distances that open up between people who once stood shoulder to shoulder. Heavy themes, handled with extraordinary restraint.

Money for Nothing opens with one of the most recognisable riffs in rock history, a commercial juggernaut that somehow sits comfortably alongside the quiet devastation of the title track. That closing song, Brothers in Arms, is one of the most moving pieces of music committed to record in the entire decade. Knopfler wrote it after the Falklands War, imagining soldiers on opposing sides recognising their shared humanity in the final moments. It will stop you in your tracks every single time.

In between you get So Far Away, Walk of Life, Your Latest Trick, a saxophone late at night, a piano that aches — and Ride Across the River, which builds with the patience of someone who knows exactly where they're going and isn't in any rush to get there.

This was also one of the first albums ever mastered specifically for CD, which is precisely why the vinyl version matters so much more. The original analogue warmth is all there, uncompressed, exactly as Knopfler intended it to sound in a room with good speakers and nobody talking.

Why it belongs in your collection: because some records are not just albums, they are experiences. Brothers in Arms is one of a handful of records you can put on for absolutely anyone, of any age, in any mood, and watch them stop what they're doing and just listen. That is an extraordinarily rare quality. Own it.
